Day 9 - The first book you ever read
I don't know what this was. Being the youngest of four, no one really taught me to read, I just sort of picked it up. With my brothers being 10 and up when I would have been rooting around in their books, it was probably something utterly inappropriate. There were a lot of Brambley Hedge books and other anthropomorphised woodland animals in my early childhood and Tiptoes the Mischievious Kitten featured heavily, but the first book I remember loving and reading to myself repeatedly was "A Surprise for Dumpy" by Molly Brett

Dumpy (a dormouse) rescues a tiny creature in a Marmalade Fur Coat who he finds in the middle of the road (he's going to be 'flat as a pancake' if Dumpy doesn't do something). He takes the creature into the wood but none of his wood-based friends have ever seen a creature in a Marmalade Fur Coat before. So Dumpy, for reasons that are never fully explained, decides to keep the creature and makes her carry out household chores (there's a blue checked apron). However, Dumpy falls into a deep sleep (when the frost froze and the snow snowed) and the creature in the Marmalade Fur Coat stays in a caravan with some gypsies (a plot device if ever I saw one) and returns in the spring and does all the chores Dumpy had told her to do while he was hibernating. Dumpy wakes up and has a springtime party and during the party something comes PAD, PAD, PAD down the hallway and it turns out to be...... A GREAT BIG CREATURE IN A GREAT BIG MARMALADE FUR COAT, wearing Dumpy's blue checked apron around it's neck like a bib! Dumpy (and I) both learned that a very little kitty can grow into GREAT BIG CAT.

Thiking about it, this probably explains the several huge, ginger stray cats that litter my adult life.
