Day 1 - the book you're reading now

I'm nearly at the end of A Storm of Swords: Part 1 Steel & Snow. Thanks to [ profile] fringedweller,a two for one offer in a service station on my way on holiday, and a week with nothing to do but read and I've made enough headway into Game of Thrones to be *incredibly* pissed off if the author dies before he's finished. (Yes, [ profile] indian_skimmer you did warn me). I'm pretty fussy with sci-fi/fantasy books (as with books generally) so tend to stick to tried and tested authors. The show probably helped me get far enough in to care, and the books have helped me look past the gratuitous nakedness and dubious sex of the show.

I'm also part way through 'A Street Cat Named Bob" as part of my ongoing committment to managing to only get caught in conversation with attractive men at the gym when I'm reading an embarrasing cat book, not something cool or intellectual. John Ronson's 'What I do' is my default 'in my bag' book atm.

Has anything interesting happened in that time? Erm....

There were Fantastic Lemurs. They jumped and stretched and yawned. Unfortunately I missed the oportunity to scratch one behind the ears because I was being good and following The Not-Stroking-Wild-Animals-and-Getting-Your-Arm-Ripped-Off Rule.

There was Batting!Geraint (who has been worryingly absent up until this point)

There was a surprise meeting with [ profile] akkrenskarin (although not that much of a surprise seeing as it was at St Lawrence) and a personal tour through Canterbury shopping centre.

There was a mediocre England performance. (BTW, I'm pretending Matt Prior doesn't exist, there's an invisible man keeping wicket for England atm - I am not retiring the List of Idiotic People with Ridiculously Optimistic Opinions about Matt Prior just yet)

There was the devestating news that Sangakkara won't be playing in the championship on the days I'd planned to go and see him Warwickshire. I'm thinking of writing a letter to Sri Lanka asking for him back.
or at least not bitterly disappointed.

I'm still reserving judgement, because it didn't seem to show any willingness to actually explain anything, but it does have two things working in its favour in comparison with Dr Who:

a) It's not made for 6 year olds
b) It's not embarrassed to be sci fi

cut for some tangentally important rambling about dr Who, Torchwood and Queer as Folk )
