Seriously, no one gets away with criticising Stargate

Well, THAT just about sums up everything I've ever hated about the New Doctor Who

Dear Mr Davies,

The following things are better about Stargate than your show:

1) It's not ashamed about being sci-fi
2) It can do special effects, and doesn't think its audience is stupid enough to find a rubber mask convincing. Except in that episode with the fire, and that was because they didn't have much money.
3) Two of its producers spent the first week in their job thinking up words to the theme tune
4) Baal
5) The Canadian Airforce regularly lend it helicopters.
6) At no point have they thought it a good idea to employ Billie Piper.
7) The Furlings

I could go on, but I have Fifteen series of Stargate to go and watch.

I watch both so what do I know? Except that RTD does seem to enjoy saying things to piss off fandom and he does have a Christmas special to promote.

Although that kind of proves my point.

A) Why is he doing a sci fi show if he despises the genre and its fans so much?
B) If his christmas special is so poor that he has to go around criticising other shows (and not in an erudite and informed way, I might add) in order to promote it, maybe he should spend more time on production.

You see I don't think he does despise sci fi. RTD does love Doctor Who but tends to annoy a lot of the old school fanboys and girls cause he swept in and changed 'their' show. I think he enjoys playing up to that and some things are said deliberately. Personally I ignore most of what he says and watch all my shows because I enjoy them.

Don't worry about being defensive I know what you mean. Where Doctor Who fails is the fact it's not perceived by a lot of people as proper sci fi. People who dismiss sci fi programmes but then say they watch Doctor Who piss me off.

To be honest, he can say and do what he likes to Dr Who, but he didn't. He took a pot shot at a show he's obviously never watched and played to the usual "because it's got Star in the title it must be bad" knee-jerk anti sci-fi crowd. It also strikes me as the height of arrogance, when his show draws a fraction of the audience and following that Stargate does.

Of course you should watch the shows that you enjoy - there are plenty I watch that other people don't like (and that have some arrogant tosspots in charge of them as well!) I just won't hear anyone criticise Stargate without coming to its aid. It deserves that kind of loyalty.

I think it's more a case of "more reasons why RTD should think before he speaks". One offhand comment by an otherwise dedicated Dr Who/sci-fi fan shouldn't be considered enough to wipe out 30 seasons and 45 years of some of the best sci-fi ever shown on tv.

And I think I'll say no more as I don't want to bring a flamewar to your block :)

As much as RTD would like to take credit for previous seasons of Dr Who, he can't. I have no problem with previous Dr Who - even if it wasn't ever a big thing of mine - new Dr Who seems to have gone to his head though.

I've explained previously why I hate new Dr Who, so this comment really has nothing to do with it, but I'm not going to let people run around being rude about Stargate. I'm contractually obliged to defend it.

I suppose my point is you can't have your cake and eat it and RTD seems to be trying to do just that: criticising sci fi and then trying to reap the rewards at the same time. You either admire and respect something or not, I resent anyone who wants to take pots shots and laugh at sci fi fans, but also take their money and plaudits.

We shall end it here in a pre-holiday spirit of forgiveness and non flameness!
