I have just spent the entire weekend up to my neck in stale canal water. It was only supposed to come up to our knees but due to the heavy rain in the past few weeks it was neck height. If you've never tried swimming in thigh length waders, I don't recommend it.

Anyway I had a fantastic time ridding a stretch of Nottinghamshire canal of reeds, soaking two sets of clothing with hydrogen sulphate, discovering that my calf muscles are so large they don't even fit into waders properly (freak, I'm really a freak) making regular jokes about rubber fetishes, overseeing the slowest barbeque in the world and eating a pudding which actually put up resistence when we tried to serve it.

I always forget how much I enjoy conservation weekends. I'm all ache-y and covered in orange algae, but I enjoyed myself nonetheless.

That sounds like a productive weekend.

Dare I ask where in my wonderful home county you were cleaning the canal? And I could have told you it's been torrential rain a couple of times last week - it was the deluge on Wednesday, which I got caught in.

Just to the North of the city centre, but I can't remember more details.. Oh and BTW the A453 is closed completely from jct 24 which really screws me coming to you on saturday, (it took an extra hour and a half to navigate my way to Burton Joyce) any chance you know someone who can give me directions from Jct 25? The official diversion route is stupid and then just stops suddnely in the centre of Nottingham.

Was it my side of the city or the other side? Cos if it was my side, its probably the Grantham canal. The other side, I don't know so much about!

It sounds like you had a wonderful weekend, despite the orange algae, hydrogen sulphate and sentient pudding.

Orange algae is exciting. Although if you encountered any turquoise algae you might be best going to see a doctor...

I wish we had seen turquoise algae...

We also found an exciting looking egg and a group vote determined it was a dinosaur egg
