I turned on to see England at 41-3 chasing 221 and I actually burst out laughing. It's so nice to have that weight of expectation lifted.

Also, in the interests of making bizarre and irrational statements about wicket keepers - everyone else has been doing it for so long I may as well join in now - I'm backing Nixon to win this one for us.

I'm mainly backing Nixon because he has Entirely Correct Opinions About Geraint Jones and is therefore a Good Person but also because he's old, and if cricket isn't a sport for old and/or fat people, I don't want a part of it.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one backing Nixon. Ex-Kent too :-)

Okay, the Kent thing may well be part of it too. Also, I'm happy for him to be a placeholder until that fantastic county season for Geraint and the triumphant return next winter. /ridiculous optimism

First time I've seen him play, but I'm rapidly becoming a fan. I like his attitude.

I'm pretty sure that's why they've picked him. They want chatty and enthusistic people behind the stumps, quite rightly.

I agree totally.

BTW, I just got a Google alert for this post.

A Geraint Jones one? I'm going to have to start referring to him as as Geraint so they don't get picked up. .

Yes. I think f-locking your posts would probably stop it too.

It would, but there are a couple of non-LJ people who read it, so I'm reluctant to do that.

I will save f-locking for when I'm being particularly embarassingly obsessive about Geraint (as opposed to just routinely embarassingly obsessive).

Have you checked the box in your settings that says "minimise inclusion in search engines" or something similar?

Well, see, that would be a sensible thing to do so... no.

I like Paul Nixon. I prefer him to Read, maning because Nixon can actually bat and doesn't make me want to smack him.

Not wanting to smack him is a big part of my rational as well. However, I wouldn't get too excited about Paul Nixon's batting. It doesn't look like it's going to stand up to too much pressure. Still better than Read's though.

He's got more character behind the stumps as well, far more then Read. That's what you need, gee up the team and get in the ear of the batsman and things.

I had a little moment of uncontrollable hysterical giggling in the library and people looked at me strangely.

I'malso taking some comfort in the fact that we're not being made to wear lilac with green stars and yellow stripes. Sartorially we have the upper hand. And I don't get to say that about England players enough.

And really, what's being good at cricket if you look like circus performers while you're playing?

Exactly. Even Ponting looked embarrassed and he once wore a Thundercats t-shirt voluntarily.

Precisely. You shouldn't remind me of the Thundercats t-shirt.
